Why There Are Selfish, Horrible, Terrible People in the World

There are 7.5 billion people in the world.  That’s a lot of people.  It wouldn’t be so bad, but unfortunately, more than a few of them are selfish, horrible, terrible people.  When the circumstances of life require us to interact with these people, it often leaves us with one persistent question… Why?

“The only thing that could spoil a day was people. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.”  Ernest Hemingway

Why are some people so self-centered and selfish?  Why do some people always take and never give?  Why are some persistently petty and difficult?  Why are some people assholes?

The answer is simple.  Not gratifying, but simple.  Some people are self-centered and selfish because they are the self-centered and selfish people.  Some are difficult and petty because they are the difficult, petty people.  Some people are assholes because they are.  ‘Why’ doesn’t really matter.  At all.  It simply is what it is.

Rather than waste any time or energy trying to figure out the reasons, just acknowledge the fact that some are selfish, horrible, terrible people.  Avoid them when you can.  Let them remind you of how fortunate you are to have people in your life that are wonderful and generous and beautiful.  When you encounter the difficult, petty people, be grateful they no longer have a place in your life.  The more terrible they behave, the more grateful you should be.

“Good is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death.”  Desmond Tutu

  2. I always figure they are in some sort of pain, either physical or emotional. They are trapped in their ‘pain body’ (Eckhard Tolle). I wish them to be released, as they carry within them the capacity for joy and happiness, but have forgotten how to access it.
